Are you a couple that loves adventure? Or is your ideal honeymoon anywhere but a hot sweaty beach? An Alaskan honeymoon could just be the honeymoon adventure for you! With so many places and options where do you start planning? We have taken the guesswork out of planning such an adventure with three different ways to see Alaska. We have even included a downloadable packing list to make it even easier.

When is the ideal time to visit Alaska? I honestly think it really depends on what you are wanting to do. June-August you are going to probably find your most favorable weather. The Northern Lights can be seen Aug-April but keep in mind cruise ships only sail May-October. The railway is open about the same time frame, and driving in the depth of winter could be challenging. I personally prefer September. The weather is a tad chilly so you feel like it's Alaska plus you get a chance to see those Northern Lights!

Let's talk about ways to see Alaska!

1) By Land.

  • Fly into Anchorage and explore the area for a couple of days. Rent a car, an RV, or even a fully equipped van and take to the road to explore. Enjoy places like Denali National Park and Reserve, Kenai Fjords National Park, Seward, Homer, Fairbanks and so much more all a reasonable driving distance from Anchorage.

2) By Train. The Alaska Railway is a great option! Just remember it doesn't operate year-round.

  • Fly into Anchorage, and spend a few days exploring the area.

  • Grab the train from Anchorage to Talkeetna. Stay in a lodge or even camp for a few days. Take a flightseeing tour, eat amazing Alaskan cuisine, check out their adorable main street, go on a rafting excursion or zipline.

  • Grab the train from Talkeetna to Denali Park. Do a little Glamping and explore the national park. You can hike, wilderness explore, canoe, ATV, river rafting, dog sledding, or go on a helicopter tour. The possibilities are never ending in this beautiful park.

  • Grab the train from Denali to Fairbanks. In Fairbanks you can do things like gold panning, visit Running Reindeer Ranch, ride the Riverboat Discovery, and even visit a hot spring.

  • Take the train all the way from Fairbanks to Anchorage.

3) By Sea.

  • Tons of cruise lines offer cruises that leave from Seattle, Vancouver, or even Anchorage and most make stops in Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan and will take the ship right up to a real glacier.

  • Or you can do a land and sea combo which is my absolute favorite way to see Alaska!

Cruise Port highlights:

Juneau (always raining! Bring rain gear for sure)- Absolutely do whale watching! And you have to make a stop at the famous Tracy's King Crab Shack.

Skagway- This town is so much fun and has a ton to do. Take a tip on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway. Stunning! Also don't miss out on eating at Skagway Brewing Company. And another, that absolutely can't be missed, is the Red Onio Brothel Museum. Trust me on this!

Ketchikan- This one wins for the cutest little town, ever! Tons of shops and local eats.

With so much to see and you, I know you will go back time and time again! Can you say anniversary tip? Want to know more? I just recently released a podcast where I talk about this a little more in dept. You can listen HERE.
